Realtime Activation
Carbon offers the ability to start serving campaigns to a new audience segment immediately after creation using real time activation. Segments are returned in LocalStorage
and are also available using the Carbon SDK.
Note that before you can initiate real-time targeting there are a few things you need to do in your Google Ad Manager (GAM) account. Read on to find out more.
Audience Activation
To activate an audience for real time targeting, locate the audience in the ‘My Audiences’ tab (or create a new audience) and click the row action button at the right hand side of the relevant row and click activate to bring up the ‘Activate Audience’ window.
In the modal window, copy the unique audience ID, then hit Activate.
The platform will now update each profile in the audience and write the audience id at profile level. This
Google Ad Manager
To serve ads in real time you will need to set up Key Value targeting in your ad server. To do this for Google Ad Manager (GAM), first ensure the realtime activation service is enabled in your account by checking with your Account Manager.
Publisher Tag Setup
Before targeting via realtime there is a one-time on page setup to your Google Publisher Tag implementation. In the page source code, put the following script at or near the top of the "head" it should be before google tag loads/executes:
You should now see carbon_segment being made available to the ad inventory on your pages.
Targeting Setup
Once segments are being made available to GAM, set up tatgeting in the GAM interface. Log in to your GAM account, and in the sidebar navigation under Inventory, click Key-values
Add carbon_segment
as a new Dynamic Key Value, then save without entering any Targeting values.

To target a campaign to a Carbon Audience, select the relevant ID from Custom targeting for the line item:
