Deploying The Carbon Tag

We've focused on making the Carbon tag easy to deploy. The Carbon tag acts as a package manager, requesting only the essential components required for each installation.

The tag itself is non–blocking, asynchronous and deferred so it has little impact on overall page load. It will be served via a global CDN closest to your users for optimal performance.

You have an option for on page deployment or via Google Tag Manager. We recommend to use on page deployment when posibile.

On Page Deployment

A single tag for your entire network will be provided by your Account Manager during onboarding. The same tag should be used on every instance and every page view. The actual tag will have the XXX in the below snippet replaced with your Carbon Organisation Identifier:

For best results and full compatability, we recommend that the tag be deployed as early as possible in the <head> of each page.

Google Tag Manager

If you would prefer to deploy Carbon using Google Tag Manager we have a direct integration available in the Tag Manager Gallery:

Enabling the Template

Select Templates from the left hand navigation, then search for Carbon from the gallery.

Click Add to workspace

Confirm this action in the modal dialogue by clicking Add. Note that Injecting scripts is a core functionality of the Carbon tag and will not compromise your website.

Adding the Tag

Once you have enabled the template from the Google Tag Manager Gallery, you can deploy Carbon by adding a new tag in GTM. Scroll down to Custom tags in the Choose tag type dialogue, where you will see the Carbon tag from the gallery. Click on this to add the tag.

Now enter your Unique Carbon Organisation ID, which you will have received from your Account Manager during onboarding. If you are unsure or have not received an ID, please speak to your Account Manager.

Under Triggering select "All pages" to make sure the Carbon tag gives your a comprehensive view of activity.

Save the tag and publish the container.
